Five Overlooked PC Games

PC gamers know about the mega hits like StarCraft, Half Life, Civilization, Doom, Fallout among others, but there are games that have, for various reasons, flown under the radar.  Here are 5 games that you may not have heard of, but should play at least once.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines – November 16, 2004 – Troika Games

VMB is another fantastic game riddled by bugs upon release and reported as unplayable for some. The developer, Troika, folded just months after release and it was up to the modding community to continue supporting the game.  Modders have released several patches and fixes to VMB over the years which has resulted in a better gaming experience for those just getting started.  Even with all of the issues this game had, or still has, VMB is one of the finest RPGs ever to be released.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay – December 8, 2004 – Starbreeze Studios

I was as surprised as anyone when I played COR for the first time.  It is a known fact that a game based on a movie usually finds it way into the bargain bin a few days after release.  Though that was the case for COR, it was not because it was a bad game.  It was actually a fantastic game that simply did not sell.  COR has a nice mix of FPS action along with stealth gameplay that does not get in the way.  If you like blasting your way through a group of enemies or enjoy hiding in the shadows waiting for the perfect moment to silently take down your enemy, COR has it all.  If you can find it on eBay or a bargain bin at your local gaming store, pick it up.  You will not be disappointed.

Painkiller – April 12, 2004 – People Can Fly

What can be said for Painkiller.  It does not try to be something it is not.  Painkiller is a shoot’em up filled with satisfying action.  It is like Serious Sam sprinkled with a dusting of Doom.  Great level design, superb weapons, hoards of detailed and varied monsters make this a true sleeper of PC gaming greatness.  Painkiller also has a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning.  Do you need another reason to play this game?

Beyond Good and Evil – November 11, 2003 – Ubisoft Milan

Beyond Good and Evil is another marvelous game that nobody knows much about. Terrific art style, lovable characters, and a story to match are what this game does so great.  Although the controls can be hard to figure out a first, you will eventually get used to it.

Nancy Drew Series – 2 Releases Per Year Since 1998 – Her Interactive

The first Nancy Drew game was released in December of 1998 and since then, Her Interactive has pushed out 24 titles with another due later next year. The Nancy Drew series is an extremely popular collection of games based on the literary character. These games offer tremendous value for their intense storylines and puzzle solving.  This series is a masterpiece of the point and click adventure genre.  In this day and age of monsters, blood, zombies, mindless shooting and mature stories, Nancy Drew is a breath of fresh air.  While some of the games can be a little on the on the scary side, you can sit your 9- year old child down and play this without having to worry about foul language, nudity or bloody violence.
