  1. I’ve got one, but it is quite personal :-). Long time ago when I we (me and my wife) were playing Grandia 2 on my Dreamcast there was a character of a name Roan. We have met him somewhere in the caverns and took him into our group. We have invested much currency into his equipment, and also XPs into his development. So when we have reached a Kingdom of Cyrum and it turns out that the boy is a long time ago missed prince, and he decided to stay in his kongdom instead of go for the further adventure with us… It was not only a story twist for us, it was a real devastating disaster. However today, over ten years I feel about it as my favorite jRPG twist. Even better than the ones from FFVII or Chrono Cross…

  2. My favourite one is Final Fantasy VIII, I’m not a huge fan of VII but I love VIII and why? It was my first RPG game that I’ve ever played on my Playstation 1 when I was like 11. The game was in German, I didn’t understand a word back these days (I’m from Czech Republic) but I completed the game, now I’m really proud of myself 🙂

  3. My favorite RPG is Terranigma for the SNES. I have played it for many hours in my childhood. The plost twist was epic! The main character dies and was reborn later as the true hero. at the end of the game i cryed 😦 because it was an amazing game.

Thanks for reading my post 🙂

  4. Bioshock, which can be considered as a FPS RPG, has hands down the best twist I have ever experienced. Would You Kindly. After experiencing the twist, I immediately started a new game and played all the way through again. Cheers

  5. I loved how when playing FF VI (USA: 3) when the world ended, you had a brand new world of ruin to explore and reunite the characters.

  6. Castlevania: Aria of sorrow. Nothing beats the simple equation of working your way through the castle to beat dracula and save the world, only to find out that you are dracula. Instant brain explosion.

  7. My favorite plot twist to this day, was when you got to the end of the vary first castle and where told that the princes is in another castle!! To this day I have never beat Super Mario Bros. One day while I was at football practice my mother, father, and sister all sat at home and beat it. sooooo scared……

  8. I think I’d have to go with Darth Revan in Star Wars – KOTOR. Those lying Jedi had me suckered all along, but I had the last laugh in the end with Bastilla at my side, muahahaha ! I’m sure most people could see it coming a mile away, but I never did. By the same token, I think I get more pleasure when the penny finally drops or the twist is revealed because it’s a revelation to me, and not something you’re just waiting on to finally be revealed.

Have to also mention FFVII and Aeris. I think that caught EVERYONE out !

    • I believe Revan was my favorite as well. I had thoughts you could be Revan, but I try really hard not to work anything in my head while playing a game or watching a movie. As for Aeris, that was the most emotional I have ever gotten because of a video game. I did not cry, but I was ANGRY. I spent the rest of the game holding on to my rage while waiting for my opportunity to finally take out Sephiroth.

I had also leveled up Aeris fairly well too. 🙂

  9. My favorite plot twist of all time would be in Suikoden 2. The twist happened at the end when you collect all 108 characters and find out that Nanami did not actually die protecting you, but instead hides away for a while and you only find out at the end.

  10. First of all, I would like to start of by saying that I had extreme troubles choosing from all of the games I’ve played in the past. Of course I could have chosen a FF game but I digress. The latest RPG I have played is Bastion, personally it was/is one of the best I have ever played. Through out the game you’re given the freedom to do what you want and when you want and the only plot twist is at the end. I found myself questioning my decisions in the end, do I save Zulf or save myself? Do I destroy Caelondia or do I run? Either way, I never found myself questioning what was happening, it was all very natural yet at the same time it made me stop and think about my actions. These scenarios may not fall into the category of “plot twists” but it surely leaves you with the same sensation. Thanks for taking the time to read my entry, and I look forward to adding Wanderlust to my list of all time favorite RPGs!

  11. My favourite rpg plot twist was from the Infinite Space. I hope this will not be a spoiler for those who have not played this game as I am revealing little part of the story line. This is a scifi space exploration rpg and of course you go adventuring into vast space recruiting crews, upgrading ships and becoming top zero-G dog (that is what is called in the game). Bout 3/4 through the game, turns out the sister you had is not your sister but an artificial human and so are you! Interesting story line with many twist as you play from a 16yo up to an adult in two part of the story. Its the plot that keeps me playing until the end.

  12. My favorite plot twist…. hmm, it would have to be the defeat of Luca in Suikoden 2. Not that the event itself was much of a surprise; but the epic way it was done – 3 different parties of 6 characters each, an entire army, and he STILL lives for a little bit after.

Honorable Mentions to Lufia (Lufia turning out to be the goddess of death) and to Wild Arms 2 (Rudy is a goddam cyborg!).

  13. Well, i’ve always enjoyed myself a good final fantasy, secrets of mana, etc. But! Final Fantasy 9 at the start of Disc 3 where Zidane finds himself in a strange town. and the player gets a little foresight into what zidane is or came from. the twist being finding out what he really is and the story there on.

Also, that Telekinesis boss with the dragon was a major pain.

  14. I would have to say my favorite twist was in Chrono Trigger, when Crono dies. It was something that was so amazingly unexpected, and that it subverted the most common video game trope of all – that the PC never dies. It was absolute genius. Nothing has topped it for me. And even though you can still resurrect him later, I just think that killing Crono is one of the greatest twist in all of gaming.

  15. My favorite RPG has to be KOTOR and with the plot twist of me being Darth Revan. I got pissed that everyone lied to me and became evil and took over the world…MUHAHAHAH!!!!
