Play Star Wars TIE Fighter Within Chrome

For those of you using the Google Chrome browser, you can now play the LucasArts old school classic, Star Wars: TIE Fighter.  Take a trip into the Wayback Machine by clicking here.

  1. Sweet! I love these games, I’m giving this a try tonight. And if it’s just as awsome as I remember I’ll pull my original copy of X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter out of the closet and see if I can get it running on a 64bit Vista machine.

  2. Okay, so I played around with this a little bit and have decided to come back here and report my findings. It’s not so much a “hey we figured out how to play the old game in Chrome” it’s “hey we built a DosBox client for Chrome and here are a few freeware/demo games for you to try out.” Take everything you have seen and heard about Cloud Gaming and put it into DosBox and this is what you get. If you have any Dos games laying around then you can load them up, upload them to Chrome and you can now play them anywhere that you can login to Chrome. All your saves will be on Chrome so you can just pickup where you left off.

My only question, at the moment, is how robust the Chrome browser is. I know from the numerous DosBox config files I have played with, most recently in the DosBox I have on my Android, that some of these games require some pretty hefty processing power to run smoothly. I’m sure that I could get something like Alley Cat to run with no problems in the Chrome cloud, but the Dos versions of games like Warcraft 2 or Fallout 1 are much more demanding. Could they be too demanding? There is only one way to find out!

Well 2 ways since I guess I could just send some emails to their support team but what fun would that be?

    • Thanks for the rundown, Steve. Interesting to see how far technology has come when DOSBox can be loaded via a browser.

The little experience I have with Chrome is not good, so I am not the one to be offering any advice in that arena.
